If you’re a crafter, there’s a good chance you have scrap yarn or string lying around the house. Yarn crafts are a versatile and fun way to keep your kids busy and use up those random bits of yarn you have stashed away.
We rearranged our house, and the kids’ new space needed some personality. So, we looked for creative, easy yarn crafts and decided on DIY yarn-wrapped letters.
DIY, messy, and creative? We’re in!
My kids love making a space their own, and as a crocheter, DIY yarn crafts are always on my radar. So, the boys were more than happy to get on board with something crafty for their new space.
We started with a cardboard box that had been a fort in another life. I scrounged up some yarn (can’t do wool crafts without it, right!) and helped cut out the letters. Then we got sticking and wrapping. The kids lost interest for a bit, and I took over. Then they were back for pompoms and the finishing touches.
Let’s dive into what you’ll need to make your own yarn-wrapped letters.
Cut out your letters or shapes. You can use a stencil or just freehand it like I did. The yarn is forgiving and disguises any dicey cutting skills (like mine!).
Run a glue stick all over the front and back of the letter. This helped keep the first layer of yarn in place.
Tie on your yarn and go crazy. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Sure, some options might look more aesthetically pleasing (check out some amazing ideas at the end of the post), but we were going for fun, not looks.
Try changing up yarn colours and textures to add some pizazz to your letters.
Secure the yarn and add any final decorations. We went with pompoms, but you can add wooden cutouts or small toys. Have fun with it!
Hang your letters. Seriously. That’s it.
